Morocco is rapidly transforming into a major logistics and industrial hub, bridging Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Driven by the national Vision 2040 rail strategy and preparations for hosting the FIFA World Cup 2030, Morocco is investing heavily in modernizing its transport infrastructure. High-speed rail networks, urban tramways, and massive deep-water ports are expanding at an unprecedented rate. This rapid growth demands robust, high-performance track maintenance and construction materials, where precision welding moulds and thermit welding consumables play a critical role.
Morocco's high-speed rail line, Al Boraq, connecting Tangier to Casablanca, represents a milestone in African transit. Plans are underway to extend this network to Marrakech and Agadir. High-speed tracks require continuous welded rails (CWR) with zero margin for error. Our specialized sand moulds and thermit portions ensure flawless, seamless joints that can withstand the extreme dynamic loads of trains traveling at 320 km/h.
Tanger-Med Port, the largest container port in Africa and the Mediterranean, relies on massive gantry cranes running on heavy-duty crane rails. Continuous operations demand that these tracks remain perfectly aligned under immense weight. RMTS provides specialized welding moulds designed to weld thick crane rail profiles, ensuring port logistics operate without interruption.
Morocco holds the world's largest phosphate reserves, managed by the state-owned OCP Group. Transporting millions of tons of phosphate from mining regions like Khouribga and Benguerir to the industrial processing hubs in Jorf Lasfar and Safi requires heavy-haul freight trains. The rail lines carrying these massive freight loads experience severe wear and tear. High-quality thermit welding is essential to repair and maintain these tracks, preventing costly downtime and ensuring safe mineral transport across the country.
Metropolitan areas like Casablanca and Rabat-Salé have expanded their tramway networks (including Casablanca Tramway Lines T3 & T4) to ease urban congestion. Tramway tracks embedded in concrete streets require precise, low-noise, and low-vibration rail joints to protect surrounding urban structures and provide a comfortable ride. Our precision sand moulds are engineered to deliver clean, quiet joints for grooved rails and standard transit profiles.

Aluminothermic welding, also known as thermit welding, is a specialized process that uses a chemical reaction to melt steel and join rails. The reaction between iron oxide and aluminum powder generates temperatures exceeding 2500°C, producing molten steel that flows into the sand mould surrounding the rail gap. This process requires precise control, high-quality consumables, and reliable equipment to ensure the mechanical properties of the welded joint match or exceed the parent rail.
RMTS offers two distinct crucible systems to meet different project requirements in Morocco:
Supplying high-precision sand moulds and thermit portions to support high-speed rail track alignment and seamless joint welding.
Heavy crane rail welding using custom moulds to withstand extreme industrial loads and continuous maritime logistics operations.
Providing durable thermit powder and reinforced moulds for heavy-haul freight lines transporting phosphate minerals.
Supplying noise-reduction grooved rail welding kits for urban transit lines, ensuring smooth passenger transport.
RMTS has a highly skilled R&D team that works tirelessly to ensure that we produce thermit welding materials that meet the specific needs of each type of rail, including European standard profiles commonly used in Morocco.
In addition to strong R&D capabilities, RMTS actively participates in railway projects globally. We collaborate with railway authorities, construction companies, and maintenance organizations to provide tailored expertise and materials.
By participating in major railway projects, RMTS contributes to the development and maintenance of modern transit networks. Whether in high-speed rail, urban transit systems, or conventional rail lines, we offer reliable materials to ensure track safety.
RMTS maintains partnerships with research institutions, universities, and industry experts. These collaborations enable us to continually strengthen our R&D capabilities in thermit welding technologies.
Morocco's climate presents unique challenges for railway engineering. Coastal cities like Casablanca and Tangier experience high humidity and salt spray, which accelerate corrosion. Conversely, the inland and Saharan regions experience extreme heat, dry air, and massive temperature fluctuations between day and night, causing significant thermal expansion and contraction in steel rails.
RMTS welding moulds and thermit consumables are specifically formulated to address these challenges:
Our main markets are in areas such as railway main lines, seaport crane rails, subways, trams, and high-speed railways. Aluminothermic welding plays a crucial role in these fields. No matter the scenario, RMTS welding technology, with its excellent performance, serves as a powerful support for promoting industry development and ensuring operational safety.

Thermit portion, sand mould, luting sand, ignitor are the main consumables for aluminothermic welding. 1 weld requires 1 set of consumables.
Example Case: For a 10km track project using 12.5m long rails:
Calculation formula: 10000 / 12.5 × 2 = 1600 sets of consumables required.
Preparation: Ensure the rail ends to be welded are clean, free from rust, moisture, and grease, and properly aligned. The gap size (space between the two rails to be welded) shall be 26±2mm. Proper alignment is critical to prevent joint defects and ensure smooth train passage.
Moisture Warning: Thermit welding materials will fail if exposed to water. All welding materials must be kept completely dry and away from any moisture in storage, as well as during the welding process itself. Moisture can cause steam explosions when in contact with molten steel, posing severe safety risks to operators.
Storage Guidelines: Thermit welding, also known as aluminothermic welding, requires careful handling and storage. Store components in a well-ventilated, dry warehouse. Keep ignitors separate from thermite powder to prevent accidental ignition.
RMTS is a passionate and progressive aluminothermic welding manufacturing company dedicated to providing end-to-end support for our partners in Morocco.
