Belgian Rail Infrastructure

Aluminothermic Welding in Belgium's Modern Transport Networks

Belgium, situated at the geographical and logistical heart of Europe, boasts one of the densest and most heavily trafficked railway networks in the world. Managed by Infrabel, the national railway infrastructure company, this network plays a critical role in both passenger transit and European freight corridors. High-speed rail lines (HSL 1, 2, 3, and 4) link Brussels directly to major European hubs such as Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Cologne. Maintaining the structural integrity of these high-velocity lines demands welding solutions that can withstand immense dynamic stress and thermal expansion. This is where thermite welding (aluminothermic welding) serves as the gold standard for creating seamless, continuous welded rails (CWR).
Beyond mainline passenger rail, Belgium’s industrial landscape is anchored by the massive Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the second-largest seaport in Europe. The port’s expansive intermodal yard tracks and heavy-duty crane rails bear some of the highest axle loads in the logistics sector. Standard mechanical rail joints are highly susceptible to deformation under these extreme weights, leading to premature track failure and costly operational downtime. By deploying RMTS's high-quality thermite welding powder, sand moulds, and one-shot crucibles, port operators and railway contractors across Flanders and Wallonia can ensure smooth, uninterrupted freight operations.
Furthermore, urban transit authorities such as STIB/MIVB in Brussels, De Lijn in Flanders, and TEC in Wallonia are aggressively expanding and modernizing their tram and light rail networks. Urban environments present unique challenges, including strict noise reduction regulations and tight curves. Continuous welded rails installed via precise thermite welding significantly minimize noise pollution and vibration, enhancing the quality of life for city dwellers while reducing wear on light rail vehicle wheelsets.

The Future of Belgian Rail Jointing: Innovation and Safety

As Belgium transition towards carbon-neutral public transport systems, rail infrastructure maintenance must keep pace. The adoption of pre-heated sand moulds and zero-waste one-shot crucibles aligns perfectly with the sustainability goals of Belgian engineering contractors. RMTS is positioned to support this green transition by providing high-temperature ignitors, slag trays, and custom-formulated thermite portions designed to minimize environmental emissions while maximizing joint tensile strength.

Material Planning

Thermit Consumables & Calculation

Thermit portion, sand mould, luting sand, and ignitors are the essential consumables for aluminothermic welding. The general rule of thumb is: 1 weld = 1 set of consumables. Proper pre-construction calculation is key to avoiding logistical delays on Belgian worksites.
For example, on a 10km track construction project using standard 12.5m rail lengths:

Calculation Formula:
(10,000m / 12.5m) × 2 rails = 1,600 sets

Procurement for Belgium Projects

Whether you are working on the Infrabel network or a localized crane rail installation at the Port of Antwerp, RMTS provides exact packaging and containerized shipping tailored to your project volume. We ensure that sand moulds and chemical portions are packed in moisture-proof, vacuum-sealed bags to withstand the humid maritime climate of Belgium.

Service & Support for Belgian Contractors

Evolution of Aluminum Thermite Welding

Aluminum thermite welding, also known as aluminothermic welding or thermit welding, is a specialized welding technique that utilizes an exothermic chemical reaction to generate intense heat for joining steel components.

Welding Instructions

Preparation: Ensure the rail ends to be welded are clean, free from rust, and properly aligned. The gap size (space between two rails to be welded) shall be 26±2mm.

Storage & Handling

Thermit welding materials will fail if exposed to water. All welding materials should be kept away from any moisture in storage, as well as during the welding process.

Project Supervision

Our engineers provide remote or on-site supervision for complex track geometries in Belgium, ensuring correct preheating temperatures and shearing alignment.

Tailored Solutions

Offer a wide range of thermit welding materials, such as welding kits, sand mould, one shot crucible/long life crucible, luting sand, and ignitors, ensuring consistent quality and reliable performance.
