High-performance essential materials engineered for precision rail alignments in Colombian municipal and industrial projects.
Colombia is currently undergoing a massive transformation in its national transport and logistics network. Historically reliant on road transport, the Colombian government is actively promoting the reactivation of its rail corridors through the National Development Plan. From the expansion of municipal networks such as the Metro de Bogotá and the Regiotram de Occidente, to the heavy-haul freight corridors linking the interior to the Caribbean ports (like the La Dorada - Chiriguaná line), the demand for reliable, high-performance rail joint solutions has never been higher.
For these demanding projects, thermit welding serves as the gold standard for creating continuous welded rails (CWR). CWR eliminates mechanical joints, reducing track maintenance costs, minimizing train vibration, and dramatically increasing the lifespan of rolling stock. However, Colombia’s unique geography presents massive challenges. The country features diverse ecological zones, ranging from the humid tropical lowlands of the Magdalena River valley to the cold, high-altitude Andean plateaus like Bogotá (2,600 meters above sea level). These extreme temperature fluctuations and moisture variations require specialized Thermit Welding Molds that can perform consistently under any environmental condition.
Modern railway construction in Colombia demands high efficiency, minimized line closure windows, and enhanced track safety. We observe several key trends dominating the market:
As a leading supplier, we tailor our thermit welding materials to meet the specific requirements of Colombia's key industrial sectors:
Urban transit demands rapid installation and low-noise track profiles. Our high-precision sand molds and one-shot crucibles are optimized for municipal projects, providing smooth, seamless joints that reduce noise pollution in densely populated areas.
The northern freight corridors bear some of the heaviest axle loads in South America, transporting millions of tons of coal daily. The thermit portions used here must exhibit high wear resistance and superior hardness to withstand continuous heavy wheel impacts without cracking.
Marine environments require corrosion-resistant materials. The crane tracks at major ports support massive ship-to-shore cranes. Our specialized wide-gap molds and high-strength thermit portions ensure stable, long-lasting crane rail joints capable of resisting harsh coastal elements.

Our main markets are in areas such as railway main lines, seaport crane rails, subways, trams, and high-speed railways. Aluminothermic welding plays a crucial role in these fields. No matter the scenario, RMTS welding technology, with its excellent performance, serves as a powerful support for promoting industry development and ensuring operational safety.

Thermit portion, sand mold, luting sand, and ignitor are the main consumables for aluminothermic welding. The general rule is: 1 weld requires 1 set of consumables.
For engineering project estimation, you can use the following calculation formula:
This ensures procurement departments can precisely plan logistics and shipping schedules to Colombia, avoiding delays in track installation.
Evolution of Aluminum Thermite Welding: Aluminum thermite welding, also known as aluminothermic welding or thermit welding, is a specialized welding technique that utilizes an exothermic chemical reaction to generate intense heat for joining steel rail components. Invented in the late 19th century, the process relies on the reduction of iron oxide by aluminum, producing molten iron and slag at temperatures exceeding 2500°C. This high-temperature liquid steel flows into the refractory sand mold, fusing the rail ends together to create a continuous, metallurgically uniform joint.
Preparation (Step 1): Ensure the rail ends to be welded are clean, free from rust, moisture, and properly aligned. The gap size (space between two rails to be welded) shall be 26±2mm. Proper alignment is critical to ensure track geometry is preserved post-weld.
Moisture Prevention: Thermit welding materials will fail if exposed to water. All welding materials, including the sand mold, portion, and luting sand, must be kept completely away from any moisture during storage, transport, and the welding process itself.
Storage Conditions: Thermit welding requires careful handling. Store materials in dry, well-ventilated warehouses. In humid regions of Colombia, such as Barranquilla or Buenaventura, it is recommended to use pallets to keep the materials off the floor and preserve packaging integrity.
