The global transportation sector is undergoing a massive transformation. As cities densify and carbon-neutral targets loom, metropolitan authorities and national railway administrations are investing billions into upgrading transit infrastructure. Modernizing older tracks into continuous welded rail (CWR) systems has become the industry standard to ensure safer, quieter, and faster train operations. This shift demands specialized rail equipment designed specifically for transit upgrading.
From high-speed passenger lines to heavy freight and urban subways, the integration of advanced materials and high-precision machinery is vital. Aluminothermic welding plays a crucial role in modern transit systems worldwide. No matter the scenario, RMTS welding technology, with its excellent performance, serves as a powerful support for promoting industry development and ensuring operational safety.

Thermit portion, sand mold, luting sand, ignitor are the main consumables for aluminothermic welding. Each weld joint requires 1 complete set of consumables. Accurate project calculation is vital to avoid work stoppages during transit upgrading projects.
For a 10km project using 12.5m long rails:
Calculation: 10000 / 12.5 × 2 = 1600 sets
The stability of the chemical reaction in thermit portions directly affects the mechanical properties of the welded joint. RMTS ensures that every portion is manufactured in controlled environments to prevent moisture contamination, maintaining high density and tensile strength within the weld zone, which is critical for transit upgrading applications.
RMTS is a passionate and progressive aluminothermic welding manufacturing company with over 20 years of experience.
Aluminum thermite welding, also known as aluminothermic welding or thermit welding, is a specialized welding technique that utilizes a chemical reaction to generate intense heat for joining steel rail components. Over the years, this has evolved into the most reliable method for creating continuous welded rail lines globally.
Preparation: Step 1. Ensure the rail ends to be welded are clean, free from rust, and properly aligned. The gap size (space between two rails to be welded) shall be 26±2mm. Preheating, crucible setup, and chemical reaction execution must follow strict parameters to guarantee joint integrity.
Thermit welding materials will fail if exposed to water. All welding materials should be kept away from any moisture in storage, as well as during the welding process. Careful handling and storage in dry, elevated warehouses are critical to ensure safety and optimal performance.
Modern passenger and freight networks demand extreme precision. Historically, rail maintenance relied heavily on manual labor and basic mechanical tools. However, with trains traveling at speeds exceeding 300 km/h, and subway systems running at intervals of less than two minutes, the tolerances for vertical and lateral track alignment have shrunk to sub-millimeter levels. This is where advanced rail equipment for transit upgrading becomes indispensable.
Traditional jointed tracks, which use fishplates and bolts, are prone to high mechanical wear due to the constant impact of wheels passing over the joints. Upgrading to Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) eliminates these joints, creating a smooth, continuous surface. CWR reduces wear on rolling stock, lowers noise pollution in urban areas, and increases track lifespan. Achieving high-quality welds on-site requires a combination of precise cutting, tensioning, and welding equipment. The High-Efficiency Hydraulic Rail Tensioning Machine and High-Capacity Bidirectional Rail Joint Adjuster ensure that rails are welded under the correct neutral temperature to prevent track buckling or fracturing under extreme weather conditions.
Before any thermit welding can take place, the rail ends must be cut with absolute perpendicularity. Any deviation can lead to uneven weld thickness, resulting in structural weak points. Machines like the High-Precision Electric Rail Cutting Machine and the Internal Combustion Rail Cutting Machine provide the clean, vertical cuts necessary for optimal weld gaps. Once cut, the rails must be aligned vertically and horizontally. Precision tooling prevents misalignment that causes localized dynamic stress, which is a leading cause of premature rail fatigue.
In addition to installation, ongoing maintenance is crucial for transit safety. Rust, surface defects, and micro-cracks can compromise the structural integrity of the rail. The High-Performance Rail Rust Removal Machine cleans the rail surfaces, preparing them for electrical conductivity (for signaling systems) and ensuring clean contact zones for welding. Furthermore, efficient drilling systems like the Ф13 Drilling Machine allow for rapid installation of signaling bonds and structural bolts without compromising the surrounding steel structure.
