Explore our premium selection of rail cutting, grinding, and rust removal equipment, engineered to meet the strict tolerance limits of the Dutch rail network.
The Netherlands possesses one of the most heavily trafficked and technologically advanced railway networks in the world. Managed primarily by ProRail and operated by passenger carriers like NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), the Dutch rail system is a vital artery for European transit. With over 7,000 kilometers of track, maintaining absolute structural integrity is paramount to prevent network-wide bottlenecks. The Randstad conurbation, linking Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, requires high-frequency scheduling where trains run every few minutes. Under such intense operating conditions, even minor track defects or joint wear can result in massive delays, highlighting the critical demand for robust, OEM-grade rail maintenance equipment.
In addition to passenger services, the Netherlands is the gateway to Europe for freight transport. The Betuweroute, a dedicated double-track freight line running from the Port of Rotterdam to the German border, handles massive axle loads daily. Heavy industrial crane rail networks operating in the Port of Rotterdam—the largest seaport in Europe—demand specialized heavy-duty tracks. These diverse environments require customized rail welding and maintenance solutions that can withstand both rapid passenger transit wear and heavy freight load stress. RMTS is positioned to meet these exact needs by providing high-precision thermit welding consumables and maintenance machinery tailored to Dutch specifications.
1. Decarbonization and Zero-Emission Maintenance: The Dutch government has set aggressive goals to achieve carbon neutrality across all infrastructure projects. This policy has driven a transition from traditional diesel-powered track maintenance tools to zero-emission, battery-powered, or high-efficiency electric machinery. Our electric rail cutting and grinding machines align perfectly with this trend, offering clean, low-noise operations suitable for urban environments like the Amsterdam Metro (GVB) and Rotterdam Metro (RET).
2. Noise and Vibration Mitigation: Due to the high density of residential areas adjacent to rail corridors in the Netherlands, ProRail enforces strict regulations regarding noise and ground vibration. Precise profile rail grinding is essential to eliminate corrugations and ensure smooth wheel-rail contact. Regular maintenance using RMTS profile grinding machines dramatically reduces noise levels and extends track life.
3. Transition to ERTMS: As the Netherlands migrates to the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), track geometry and joint stability must be flawless. Thermit welding provides seamless, continuous welded rails (CWR), eliminating mechanical joints that can interfere with sensitive electronic track circuits and signaling systems.
Our equipment and consumables find applications in several critical Dutch infrastructure projects:

Our main markets are in areas such as railway main lines, seaport crane rails, subways, trams, and high-speed railways. Aluminothermic welding plays a crucial role in these fields. No matter the scenario, RMTS welding technology, with its excellent performance, serves as a powerful support for promoting industry development and ensuring operational safety.
Thermit portion, sand mould, luting sand, and ignitor are the main consumables for aluminothermic welding. Each weld requires exactly one set of consumables. For logistics planning on Dutch rail projects, use our standard calculation formula below:
For a 10km track section using standard 12.5m rail lengths:
Calculation: (10,000m / 12.5m) × 2 rails = 1,600 sets of consumables
RMTS is a passionate and progressive aluminothermic welding manufacturing company, supporting infrastructure teams with comprehensive field guides and storage instructions.
Aluminum thermite welding, also known as aluminothermic welding, utilizes an exothermic chemical reaction between iron oxide and aluminum powder to generate intense heat (over 2500°C). This molten steel is poured into a sand mould surrounding the rail ends, fusing them into a continuous, high-strength joint.
Preparation: Ensure rail ends are clean, free from rust, oil, and moisture. Properly align the rails. The gap size between the two rails to be welded must be maintained at 26 ± 2mm for optimal weld flow and structural integrity.
Thermit welding materials will fail if exposed to water. All welding portions, moulds, and ignitors must be kept completely dry during transit, storage, and the welding process itself. Preheating of rail ends is required to ensure proper fusion.
Store all consumables in a dry, ventilated warehouse, elevated off the floor. Keep packages sealed until immediate use. Proper storage prevents moisture absorption, which could cause weld porosity or safety hazards during reaction.
We offer a wide range of thermit welding materials, including custom welding kits, sand moulds for specific rail profiles, one-shot/long-life crucibles, luting sand, and high-temperature ignitors, ensuring consistent quality and reliable performance.
