Sand Mould Selection by Rail Profile
Sand Mould Selection by Rail Profile
Choose a sand mould by the exact rail profile and grade, not by a broad “rail mould” label. The mould is one part of an Aluminothermic Welding system, and the correct review also needs the joint gap, rail-end condition, welding procedure and required accessories. A product photograph can help identify the sand mould, but it cannot prove that its cavity matches your rail.
Start with the exact rail profile and grade
Put the rail designation, profile, grade and project location at the top of the selection request. If the buyer has only a mass-per-metre description, treat it as an initial clue rather than a complete profile identity. Different profiles can require different mould arrangements even when their mass appears similar.
Also record whether the rail is new, worn, repaired or part of a transition. Include the end condition and any drilling, cutting or preparation detail that changes the joint area. These inputs allow a supplier to discuss the correct sand mould scope instead of matching a name to a product picture.
Confirm the joint gap and local condition
The joint gap is a project input, not a value to infer from the mould image. State the planned gap, how it was measured and whether it is a routine joint, a repair condition or a changed field situation. If the rail ends are worn, misaligned or being prepared for a replacement section, describe that condition before asking for a mould.
This is where many weak RFQs lose useful detail. “For 60 kg rail” or “for standard track” may not tell a technical evaluator which profile, grade, gap or repair route is intended. A short photograph or drawing from the worksite can support the discussion, but it should supplement the written rail data.
Link the mould request to the welding procedure
The sand mould should be reviewed with the governing welding procedure or project specification. Share the procedure reference, the intended process, rail-end preparation, preheating route, mould installation steps and inspection or acceptance records that the project requires.
This does not mean that a listed product is automatically approved under the project's authority route. It means the buyer and supplier can separate two questions: whether the mould is the right product candidate for the stated rail and joint, and what the project authority requires before use.
Use the sand mould as a profile-confirmation item
Sand mould is a main aluminothermic-welding consumable in the RMTS product family and is presented for a precision-and-stability role in the welding process. The verified RMTS product view shows matched mould halves and a rail-shaped cavity. Treat that view as product identity and cavity context, not as proof of a specific profile match.
For a quotation review, ask RMTS to confirm the proposed mould reference against your exact rail profile, grade, joint gap and procedure. If the project uses a non-standard profile, repair geometry or changed gap, request a customised configuration or customised solution discussion with those inputs.

Avoid the common wrong-choice paths
Do not select a mould because its external shape resembles the rail on site. Do not transfer a mould reference from another profile, joint or procedure without technical confirmation. Do not assume that a mould, portion, crucible and luting material from separate requests form an interchangeable set.
The practical control is a matched-system check. Keep the mould, Thermit Portion, crucible workflow, luting sand, ignitor, clamps and acceptance records in one project file. Record what is confirmed, what is provisional and what the authority or welding engineer still needs to approve.

Build a profile-led RFQ
Include these items in the request:
1. Exact rail designation, profile, grade and source of the rail data. 2. Joint type, measured joint gap, wear or transition condition and rail-end preparation. 3. Governing welding procedure, project specification and authority or acceptance route. 4. Required mould quantity, work locations, schedule and destination. 5. Related Thermit Portion, luting sand, ignitor, crucible and clamp scope. 6. Drawings, labels, inspection documents or samples required for internal review. 7. Any changed condition that may require a customised configuration or solution.
The result should be a reviewable product-and-project request, not a mould name copied from a previous rail job.
Request a sand mould selection review
Send RMTS the exact rail profile and grade, joint gap and condition, welding procedure, rail-end preparation, related system components, quantity, destination, documents and acceptance route. If any rail or procedure input has changed, ask for a customised configuration or customised solution discussion instead of assuming the earlier mould remains suitable.
FAQ
Is rail weight enough to select a sand mould?
No. Use the exact rail profile and grade, then add the joint gap, condition and procedure for technical confirmation.
Can a product image prove that a mould fits my rail?
No. The image establishes product identity and general cavity context. The proposed mould must be reviewed against the stated rail and joint inputs.
What should I send first?
Send the rail designation and grade, measured gap, rail-end condition, governing procedure and the related portion, crucible and luting-sand scope.
