Precision-engineered consumables and tools critical for achieving high-durability aluminothermic welds.
Understanding the vital role of thermit welding in contemporary railway development and track maintenance.
Aluminothermic welding, widely known as thermit welding, is a cornerstone technology in the construction and maintenance of modern railway infrastructures. The process leverages a highly exothermic chemical reaction between iron oxide and aluminum powder to produce molten steel at temperatures exceeding 2,500°C. This superheated steel is then cast into a mold surrounding the aligned rail ends, effectively fusing them into a continuous, seamless joint. Because of its portability, self-contained energy source, and reliability, aluminothermic welding remains the primary method for field-joining tracks globally.
In today's global transportation landscape, the demand for high-speed passenger lines, heavy-haul cargo networks, and urban rapid transit (metro/subway) systems is growing exponentially. To ensure safety and travel comfort while minimizing track degradation, the railway industry relies heavily on Continuously Welded Rail (CWR). CWR eliminates traditional bolted joints, which are notorious for causing mechanical wear on rolling stock and require intense maintenance. Aluminothermic welding serves as the critical enabler for CWR, allowing operators to weld rails directly on-site, even in remote or challenging terrains where heavy flash-butt welding machinery cannot access.
The global market for railway thermit welding materials is shifting toward automation, eco-friendliness, and enhanced structural integrity. Modern operators demand materials that minimize installation time and reduce human error. Key trends include:

Aluminothermic welding is versatile, adapting to different track sizes, metallurgies, and operational stresses. From high-speed passenger lines to heavy industrial crane tracks, RMTS supplies tailored consumables and equipment designed for specific application environments:

High-Speed Rail (HSR): At operating speeds of 250-350 km/h, even microscopic track misalignments can lead to severe vibrations, passenger discomfort, and accelerated rail wear. RMTS provides premium-grade thermite portions and ultra-precise sand moulds to ensure that the welded joint matches the geometry of the parent rail flawlessly, minimizing dynamic wheel-rail forces.
Heavy-Haul & Crane Rails: Heavy-haul freight lines and seaport container cranes operate under extreme axle loads (often exceeding 30 tons). Standard welding joints can suffer from plastic deformation or fatigue cracking under these conditions. RMTS utilizes alloyed thermit portions containing chromium, manganese, or vanadium to increase the hardness and yield strength of the weld metal, matching the high wear resistance of heavy-duty rails.
Subways & Metro Systems: Urban transit systems present tight curve radii and limited maintenance windows (often only 3-4 hours at night). The welding process must be fast, reliable, and produce minimal smoke. RMTS's One-Shot Crucible system coupled with pre-fabricated sand moulds drastically cuts down cycle times, allowing maintenance crews to complete more welds per shift.
Standard operating procedures to ensure maximum joint life and track safety.
Preparation: Ensure the rail ends to be welded are clean, free from rust, moisture, and grease. Properly align the rails horizontally and vertically. The standard gap size (the space between the two rails to be welded) must be strictly maintained at 26±2mm to ensure complete fusion and correct weld volume.
Thermit welding materials will fail if exposed to water. All welding portions, luting sand, and sand moulds should be stored in a dry, ventilated warehouse, completely isolated from ground moisture. Keep materials in their original sealed packaging until immediately before the welding process begins.
RMTS offers a wide range of thermit welding materials, such as welding kits, sand moulds, one-shot/long-life crucibles, luting sand, and ignitors. We provide complete technical documentation, on-site training, and project instruction services to certify field operators globally.
Thermit portions, sand moulds, luting sand, and ignitors are consumables. 1 weld = 1 set of consumables.
Example: For a 10km track construction project using standard 12.5m rail lengths:
Formula: (Total Track Length / Rail Length) × 2 Rails = Total Welds Required
Calculation: (10,000m / 12.5m) × 2 = 1,600 sets of consumables.
